Cross Keys Bar & Restaurant
About This Spot
Stepping into the Cross Keys Bar & Restaurant, nestled along the charming stretch of Main Road in Great Cowden, you immediately sense a comforting blend of warmth and community. It’s the kind of place where the pace slows just enough to catch your breath, letting the soft hum of conversation and the familiar clink of glasses settle around you like a well-loved throw. Here, the atmosphere strikes a balance between relaxed and lively—a welcoming refuge whether you’re popping in for a quick pint or settling down for a Sunday meal with friends and family.
The interior carries an inviting, unpretentious spirit, a reflection of a place that’s truly rooted in its local rhythms. You might find locals gathered around the dartboard in the tap room, sharing stories over a well-poured cider, or families enjoying classic British fare that speaks to both tradition and heartiness. The menu feels like a thoughtfully curated nod to the comfort foods you hope for on a quiet afternoon or a casual evening out. From rich Sunday roasts to a selection of curries and house-special burgers, every dish seems crafted to hold a place on the table and in the stories shared afterward.
What shines through even more than the food or drink is the genuine ease the Cross Keys fosters—where conversation flows naturally, and everyone, including four-legged friends, feels welcome. Regular visitors often remark on the warm smiles behind the bar and the way the team remembers your preferences, making each visit feel like coming home. Whether you’re there to enjoy a soothing afternoon by the window or join in the buzz on a lively evening, the Cross Keys quietly captures the essence of a neighborhood hub: familiar, heartfelt, and quietly inviting.

Recently re-discovered the Cross Keys as it had been closed for a while. It’s now our favourite place to eat when visiting Hornsea. The manager is always friendly and welcoming. We’ve been twice in the last couple of months and each time the food has been delicious. One of our party doesn’t eat chips or potatoes - and they delighted her today by giving her swede and carrot mash … anywhere else just leaves her with a half empty plate. Little touches like this show how their customer service is, and why we’re definitely coming back to Cowden soon.

Cracking pub, nice and friendly team, and excellent food, curry night on Monday stood out in particular. If I'm passing in the area, I'll be sure to stop in again. Also dog friendly with dedicated area in pub, including bowls and treats.

The Cross Keys pub & restaurant is a popular large three roomed pub next to the caravan park. There is a traditional front bar and a separate room next to it, which is dog friendly and a separate dining room. I haven't tried the food but the menu looked very inviting. There is a wide range of beers, lager and cider, including three hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. There is also a wide range of real ciders, including one made locally. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and there is outside seating. I was very impressed with the quality of the real ales and the range of real ciders. I highly recommend visiting this pub.

Pleasant and reasonable enough, the curries special seemed very popular with plenty of other diners commenting how good it was. Burger was ok, not terrible, not out of this world, chicken strips starter was pleasant enough, but could have done with adding a few more given price, scampi was commented to be very good, the steak and ale pie was lovely, proper pastry, just of gravy and filled generously.

Lovely friendly place, had a large family group Sunday lunch for fathers day. Everyone enjoyed it. Also enjoyed a few drinks outside in the sun before our 30 second walk back to our accommodation.
